to use, we want to be sure that the mailer messages are addressed to
people's preferred e-mail addresses. Up until now, we have maintained
the position that as long as the State Library is funding the CERFnet
accounts, the account addresses are the only addresses that we use for
libraries and community partners. Since many libraries have moved to
other providers and many community partners (and librarians) have
personal accounts that they read regularly, we are now willing to move to
a mixture of CERFnet and alternative addresses on the mailer.
Accordingly, I am going to now collect the preferred e-mail addresses of
everyone who wishes to be on the Infopeople mailer.
If you want to receive mailer postings at an address other than the
CERFnet account assigned to your library (libxxxx1 or libxxxx2), please
send me a message from your preferred e-mail address. Please do this
even if you listed that address on a sign-in sheet at the regional
meeting; as I mentioned at a couple of the meetings, I have had problems
with the accuracy of handwritten addresses, so to insure accuracy I must
ask that you actually send me a message from your preferred address. For
the same reason, do not send me your preferred e-mail address via fax or
snail mail. I will only accept e-mail addresses via e-mail.
When you send your new address, please indicate which CERFnet address it
is replacing -- this is critical, because we do not want to continue to
post messages to addresses where they will not be read. If you are
supplying a new address, but still want the CERFnet address to remain
active on the mailer, please indicate this. (A situation where this
might occur would be where one staff or more staff members have personal
accounts which they want to use, but one or more staff members will still
be reading the CERFnet account.) If you keep the CERFnet address on the
mailer, you are making a commitment to check it regularly.
If I do not hear from a library, I will assume that the CERFnet addresses
remain the preferred addresses and will be read and cleared regularly.
Every library and community partner must have some way of accessing the
mailer postings on a regular basis; neither a library nor a community
partner can simply opt not to receive mailer postings at this point. As
I noted at the regional meetings, once we can split the mailer into
listservs, then people can choose to subscribe or not, but right now
everyone must receive all postings. If there is something you don't want
to read, jus use the delete key. The reason for our insistence on this
is that the mailer is our primary means for quick communication with
you. When I send a message to the mailer, I need to know that it reaches
every Infopeople library and is read within a few days.
In order to give CERFnet a timeframe within which they can expect to make
these mailer address changes, please send me your preferred e-mail
address by than April 30, 1995. Thanks.
