We have had no experience with desk mount scanners, but I think it would
be awkward for reading barcodes on books. We use the same hand held
scanners for patron cards and books, and it is very convenient.
We put barcodes on inside cover of books, so it is easy to flip open
cover and read with handheld scanner. Maybe you plan to put barcode on
outside cover? We also sometimes have barcode on a card in pocket inside
cover, and again handheld scanner is easy to use without removing card.
