Thanks for the info on cost and complications of configuration.
You can always configure ISDN for plain old voice and use your modem. You
don't get 56 kb, but it may have other benefits. This introduces no
compatability problem (other than the age old modem
configuration problem) and it gives toll free service within your LATA.
That benefit depends on where you live, and where your supplier is. In our
case, it would have paid off with less than 15 hours usage a month.
