Subject: Telecommunications Act of 1996

While trying to see if other listservs have discussed this thread, I have
discovered some excellent sites with information on the full text of the
Act, what actions groups are taking, etc. I thought I would share them
with you all.

On Feb. 14 it was announced that a new forum has been established for
discussion of the CDA and similar legislation called CDA96-L. It is
un-moderated, and the listowner is Gary M. Klein <gklein@willamette.edu>.
To subscribe, send the command to
<listproc@willamette.edu>.

Bob Bocher, Technology Consultant of the Wisconsin Division for Libraries
and Community Learning has placed a special section on their Web page on
the Act at http://www.state.wi.us/agencies/dpi/www/lib_nii.htm. This is
an excellent source of resources with an overview of the issues.

Pathfinder.com has listings of news articles for the most up-to-date
activities concerning the Act at
http://pathfinder.com@@cfFKByLdcgM...thfinder/politics/netpol/index.html

The text of the ALA news release was listed in the ALA gopher:
gopher://ala1.ala.org:70/00/alagophii/alagophiipress/newsmar.96

The FCC has the full text of the Act, proceedings and links to
information at other sites at http://www.fcc.gov/telecom.html.

Information about ALA's lawsuit is at
http://www.ala.org/alanow/cda/lawsuit.html.

The coalition (including ALA) that filed the lawsuit is called Citizens
Internet Empowerment Coalition. If you want to find out more information
or join the 22,300 others who have joined as of 3/12/96, check out
http://www.cdt.org/ciec/#news. Don't delay - the invitation closes March
15, 1996.

The full text as sent to the president is available at:

Some of the prior US law being amended is on the web at:
http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/index.html
and some relevant parts are:
http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/47/223.html -and-
http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/18/1462.html - this one contains a
specific reference on abourtion, which is not obvious from reading the
amendments in the bill itself.

Other organizations covering the issue:

Another group that placed a lawsuit, along with ACLU and others is ClariNet.
