Subject: Re: Internet and Children's Services
We have three internet computers not in the immediate vicinity of the desk
but more or less in sight. We allow access by appointment, one hour per
session, to patrons who have had an introductory tutorial. Patrons have
unlimited use of the web, but access to a newsgroup server is not set up in
Netscape. Nor is email. We do allow email via a separate county-wide network.
It would be useful to know if other libraries have enabled newsgroups in
their internet browsers since that is the easiest avenue to objectionable
material. The problem with not enabling newsgroups is that some usefull
material is not quite as easy to access. Newsgroup access can be had by
knowledgable patrons via search engines, but that is not quite as
straightforward as using a newsgroup server.
Some youngsters have discovered explicit pictures, but by and large there
has been no problem so far.
