I'm assuming from the programs you mentioned that you are using a Mac, but
the solution should apply to either platform. I suspect that you have an
external viewer or "Helper Application" configured for executable files. In
Netscape, when you click on a file to be downloaded you should get a dialog
box asking you if you want to "Save to Disk", or to "Configure a Viewer".
If you do NOT get this dialog box then someone has "Configured a viewer"
(this happens quite frequently). The fix: With Netscape running, go to
Options, Preferences, Helper Application and make sure nothing is configured
for executable files - these are .exe files in the PC world.
I'm sure you'll get additional comments from Mac users out there, and
perhaps I'm off track here, but I think looking at Helper Applications would
be a good place to start.
