Dean,
I think you're wrong re past postings to the ip-tec newsgroup re Netscape.
If you remove your postings, almost every post is a positive comment on
Netscape. ;)
You can see for yourself at:
IP-TEC Archive:
http://library.berkeley.edu:8000/mailinglists/tecarchive/
IP-PUB Archive:
http://library.berkeley.edu:8000/mailinglists/pubarchive/
We (Gary Parks and I) are working - in our abundant ;) spare time to
update the Infopeople web site. One of the additions will be the archives
of the IP-TEC and IP-PUB lists. Even tho the work isn't done, the archives
are now readable.
I have to say it again - I've been using Netscape, each consecutive
version as it comes out, beta and final on my home computer - never a
problem any greater than with any new software. I've been using 2.01 on my
new win95 machine since it came out and haven't had one GPF. Or from 2.0
before that.
We've been using the Windows 3.11 version of Netscape 1.2 on the library
machines, edited for security reasons, with very few problems (usually
caused by underpowered computers and long running times without rebooting
between patrons) - always solved by rebooting. The only reason 2.01 isn't
on the machines is lack of time to get the newly edited version loaded.
On our new computer we bought with the new grant and just put into service
for training the Central library staff, we are running win95 and an edited
version of the 32 bit Netscape 2.01. I've only used it for a couple of
hours so don't have enough data to report yet. But, so far, it's running
fine.
Re having two winsock.dll files. I have two, too. But, one of them is in
WINDOWS/SYSBACKUP and it isn't necessary to rename it. The one that
counts is in WINDOWS. If you had one somewhere else you might wonder
whether someone is downloading software that contains winsock.dlls to
your machine.
Is the machine you're having trouble with used by others? If so, what
opportunities do they have for changing things on the computer? This is a
lot more likely to happen accidentally than maliciously. Are all your
important files write protected? Can people put disks in the computer?
What kind of backup do you have for the computer? What kind of virus
software are you running?
There are so many things that can go wrong with a computer used by just a
single person. It boggles the mind how many things can go wrong with one
used by a continuous stream of people with varying levels of computer of
computer skills.
The new Infopeople grant requirement that a tape drive backup be used is
a good thing. Did you get one and are you using it? If you can't solve
your problems perhaps you can reload everything?
Carole
