The short answer is that "outline mode" is intended as a working
environment, not a viewing environment. Just go into "normal" or "page"
mode; select any of the offending paragraphs; reformat it into submission;
highlight it, reselect the paragraph style in the toolbar; when you get the
dialog box, check "change style to match selection; et voila. You can also
change the style sheet directly, but it makes it trickier to apply the new
style to the existing paragraphs.
