Bootup problem

I'm running Windows 3.1, and all of a sudden as it's booting up, we have a
hangup.

As it's going through all of the checking at startup, it gets to the message

"HIMEM is testing extended memory..." then after a few seconds it adds
"done" to the end of the line when the memory checks out OK.

Then the CPU goes into overdrive-the red light flashes for about 5-8 seconds
straight, then stops-and nothing. The only way to make it continue on to
loading the mouse driver is to hit the esc key.

So obviously there is a problem in booting up the mouse driver, but I don't
know enough about IBMs to know what to look for.

Any answers?
