There isn't anything in the Policy Editor that will prevent icons from
being deleted. Hiding the Desktop icons will remove the icons from
Desktop, but it doesn't prevent icons being deleted from the Start Menu (by
using Exploring or from a File/Save dialog). Here are some options:
- Keep backup copies of the shortcut files (.lnk files) in another
directory and restore them to the desktop or Start menu each boot from
commands in autoexec.bat or winstart.bat.
- Use Program Manager as the Windows shell instead of the Win 95 Explorer
shell. Program Manager can be setup with the progman.ini file to protect
its icons. This will solve a lot of problems, and will allow you to use
the Policy Editor to prevent access to Exploring. The File/Open and File
Save dialogs remain a problem, though.
- Use a security program that locks down the computer. The Win 95 Policy
Editor is NOT security. Win 95 machines do not provide any security, so if
you want to protect the computer properly you really need the help of a
security program. Fortres, Foolproof, Stoplight ELS are some that I've
seen and haven't been able to break into. See
http://infopeople.berkeley.edu:8000/Security/ for links to these program.
