password protected levels of access to win95 and programs. For the library
patron there are NO desktop icons and there is no need for them. The
start menu is restricted to Netscape; the Programs, Settings, Run, etc.
commands are either missing or inoperative. It is not possible to get to
DOS or Windows functions nor is it possible to run programs other than
Netscape. If access to other programs is desired, that can be
accommodated. Dial-up is via the Windows dial-up feature plus Dunce which
automatically loads Netscape after connection.
While this is not perfect security it does prevent most patrons from
fooling with the system. The biggest hole is via Netscape itself. This
hole can be plugged with one of the third party programs; I'm evaluating
IKIOSK and it seems to do the job. For example, the Netscape open file
command can be prevented, and the various other setup options can be
disabled as well.
The administrator, via a separate password, has full access to Windows and
DOS.
