How to get a library card
- A library card is issued free of charge to any person over 5 years old.
- The Library Card Application requires the following information:
- Name, phone number, and current mailing address
- Date of birth
- Social Security Number
- Driver's license or California ID (shown as photo ID)
- Name of a Modoc County reference
- Name, address and phone number of a relative living in a different household.
- The application card of a minor must be signed by a parent or legal guardian.
- A patron is financially responsible for all materials checked out on library card. The parent or legal guardian is responsible for materials checked out on a minor's card.
- A library card is valid for 2 years unless revoked. A library card in good standing may be renewed.
Loan Policies
- Patrons must present their library cards to check out materials.
- Borrower's privileges are cancelled if there are any overdue items, unpaid fines, damages, or losses.
- A new patron may have 2 items checked out at any given time during the first 30 day period after a new card is issued.
- After the initial 30 day period, patrons over 18 years of age may have up to 10 items and patrons under 18 years of age may have up to 5 items checked out at any given time.
- Most library materials are loaned free of charge for a period of 30 days.
- New books are loaned for 14 days.
- Magazines are loaned for 7 days.
- Some reference materials may be borrowed overnight, due by 10 a.m. the following day.
- Some manuals, instruction materials, and reference items require a deposit.
- Music cassettes and talking books are loaned for 14 days.
- Video cassettes (up to 4 at a time) are loaned for 3 days.
- Audio cassette players may be rented for 14 days for $2.00.
- TV's/VCR's and slide projectors/screens may be rented to organizations for up to 3 days at a fee of $3.00 per day.
- Materials are due back on or before the due date.
Renewals
- Most materials may be renewed twice, unless there is a request for the material by another patron.
- Materials to be renewed must be brought to the Circulation Desk, except for special circumstances: extreme weather, illness, etc.
Overdue Fines and Notices
- Overdue fines are calculated per item, per business day up to 1/2 of the replacement cost:
- Adult materials: $.20/day
- Juvenile materials: $.10/day
- Videos: $2.00/day
- Reference materials: $1.00/day
- An Overdue Notice is sent 1 week after the due date.
- A Bill for replacement cost plus billing ($5.00) and processing fees ($3.00) is sent 2 weeks after Overdue Notice.
- A Notice of Referral to collection agency plus collection fee ($10.00) is sent 2 weeks after Bill.
Replacement Charges
- Lost patron card: $1.00.
- Missing barcode: $1.00.
- Lost materials:
- Current replacement cost
- Overdue fines (when applicable)
- $3.00 processing fee (for ordering, cataloging, covering and labeling)
- $5.00 billing fee (when applicable)
Damages
- Damaged materials will be assessed by the County Librarian.

Holdings of Modoc County Library.
- North State Cooperative Library System Catalog:
Holdings of 12 member libraries, including Modoc County Library, as well as some academic affiliates.
- GALE'S General Reference Center Gold:
Periodical database with remote access; more than 1100 periodicals in full text.
- EBSCO's NoveList
Find a good fiction book to read!
- Electronic encyclopedias.
- Internet.
- North State Teen Scene:
North State Cooperative Library System's web page for teens includes resources for homework, college and careers, reading and writing, as well as links to fun sites.
- California Indian Library Collection:
Modoc County Library's CILC includes printed materials, photographs, and sound recordings on the following tribes: Achomawi, Klamath Lake, Klamath River, Modoc, and Northern Paiute.
- Genealogy: Local newspaper and census records on microfilm.
Interlibrary Loan
- Library card required.
- Materials may be requested from libraries throughout the United States.
- Interlibrary Loan is free (except for charges applied by a lending library or a $2.00 fee for requested materials NOT picked up.)
Children's Services
- Story hours:
- Alturas: Fridays, 10:30am - 11:00am (Pre-school).
- Cedarville: Fridays, 3:30pm.
- Lookout: 2nd Wednesday of the month, 4:00pm.
- Adin: Call branch for current schedule.
- Additional story times offered for holidays and special requests.
- Summer Reading Program: Alturas, Adin, Cedarville, and Lookout. Call (530) 233-6358 for information.
- Internet Access
Other Services
- Library tours: Scheduled by request.
- Photocopies: $.20/page. First 5 pages from reference materials are free.
- Typewriter use in library.
