Transforming Life After 50: Public Libraries and Baby Boomers
TLA50 or Transforming Life After 50: Public Libraries and Baby Boomers is a statewide initiative launched by the California State Library in the summer of 2007. The purpose of this LSTA-funded initiative is to inspire library innovation in serving and engaging our state's growing population of baby boomers. This group of active, older adults is expected to grow more than twice as fast as California's total population, increasing to 8.5 million people by 2020. As early as 2010, one in five Californians will be 60 years of age or older. Research has shown, however, that the current paradigm of library services for "seniors" does not match the characteristics and/or interests of this baby boomer generation, and that this cohort will require new language, strategies and approaches. As stewards of lifelong learning, however, public libraries are ideally positioned to become cornerstone institutions for baby boomers and productive aging IF they retool to better serve and engage boomers.
