Getting the Most from PowerPoint

Do you "get the jitters" when you have to:

  • make a presentation to a community group.
  • address a meeting of the library board or Friends group.
  • defend your budget before the city council.
  • introduce a new service to staff or the public.
  • teach an instructional session.
In these situations, do you rely on hand-written notes? Do you struggle with overhead transparencies or flip charts? Do you wish that you could be a more effective presenter? Then this workshop is for you.

PowerPoint is a powerful tool that library staff members can use in a variety of work-related situations. It will not only help the audience focus on important points but it will help you, the presenter, stay on track. PowerPoint also allows you to make last-minute updates or "on-the-spot" changes to your presentation. Graphics, sounds, and movements are easily incorporated into presentations. Learn the "magic" behind creating a top-notch presentation.

Workshop Description: In this all-day beginning PowerPoint class, you will learn the basic ins and outs of creating a new PowerPoint presentation and altering an existing presentation. We will cover the various print options that are so important when you need to create student handouts or presenter's notes.

Highlights: While creating a short PowerPoint presentation in the workshop you will learn to:

  • Create presentations with your own color choices and backgrounds
  • Copy and paste slides between presentations
  • Use the various PowerPoint views to reorder slides
  • Efficiently rearrange screens for maximum readability
  • "Build a slide" to give movement to the screen
  • Add graphics and sounds
  • Add notes to each slide
  • Modify another's presentation for your own needs

Note: For California public libraries receiving Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grants, this workshop is a Gates "follow-on" that supports software on your Gates workstations.

Who should attend: Anyone who would like to use PowerPoint to create presentations for meetings, staff training or to create learning modules.

Prerequisites: Those attending should be:

  • comfortable using a mouse
  • able to open a program and save a file

Please Note: There is a $50.00 fee for this workshop. InFoPeople does not provide parking passes, lunch or refreshments.

Fee increase note: The fee for most Infopeople workshops scheduled for the 2001/2002 fiscal year (i.e., those workshops scheduled on or after October 1, 2001) has been raised to $75. Some special workshops, such as those that cover more than one day or that involve the distribution of licensed software or other products, may have higher fees.
