Surfing the Curriculum: K-12 Internet Resources

  • Do you spend too much time looking for relevant, high quality Web sources to assist students with their homework assignments?
  • Would you like to provide teachers and home-schoolers with authoritative Web sites, connected to standards-based instruction by grade level and subject area?
  • Did you know that there are substantive Internet sources that support the curriculum in grades Kindergarten through 12?
  • Are you interested in offering engaging Internet sources to meet the informational and recreational needs of youth?

Workshop Description: This workshop will introduce you to a wealth of content rich and authoritative Web sites for students and the adults who work with them. These sites have been carefully selected to connect with the California Content Standards, Kindergarten through Grade Twelve, as adopted by the California State Board of Education. The five major subject areas include English-Language Arts, History-Social Science, Science, Math, and Visual and Performing Arts. Also included will be a selection of sites featuring broader homework help, general reference, and recreational interests for youth.

Highlights: Using presentation, exercises, and handouts, this full day workshop will provide the following:

  • Bookmark collections of substantive subject Web sites in the five major areas of classroom instruction, organized by:
    • grades for Kindergarten through grade 8
    • by subject for grades 9 through 12
  • The best of Web-based ready reference resources, including almanacs, dictionaries, calendars, and encyclopedias available online.
  • A sampling of general homework help sites to allow for general searching and broader interests.
  • A review of search engines and subject directories designed for students.
  • A selection of recreational sites that support interactivity, recreation, popular reading sources, cultural and social interests.

Who Should Attend: Public and school library staff who seek substantive and authoritative Web resources to assist students in their classroom assignments and teachers and parents in their curriculum goals.
