Staffing for Results: Working Smarter

  • How long does it take to catalog a book?
  • Can it be speeded up so some staff hours can be moved from Technical Services to Public Services?
  • How do I provide the new services my community wants with the same number of staff?
  • How do I staff new or enlarged facilities?
  • Why is everyone so stressed when some usage figures are actually down?

Allocating staff to all of a library's activities is a challenging process. Come learn how to use the data gathering and analysis tools included in PLA's newest management publication Staffing for Results, from one of the co-authors.

Workshop Description: This all-day workshop will provide an introduction to the concepts and tools developed in Staffing for Results: A Guide to Working Smarter. You will learn how to use tools of workload analysis to identify, understand, and quantify the work done in your library. At the end of the session, you will be able to determine who is performing a given task, what steps are required in any given work process, whether you are making the most effective use of your existing staff, and whether you need more or different staff. And, you will know how to get the "hard data" you need to make a compelling case for change.
