Using the Web for Collection Development

The Web has given librarians access to vastly greater amounts of collection development information—and some might see this as a mixed blessing. The amount of available information can be overwhelming, and it can be difficult to determine how best to use these new Web sources efficiently and proactively. Two experienced collection development librarians - one who selects print materials, and one who selects electronic resources - will share their best practices.

Workshop Description: In this all-day hands-on InfoPeople workshop, you will learn to navigate the confusing and often overlapping realms of collection development of print and online resources. The instructors will advise you on how to use everything from vendor databases to listservs to find, compare and organize information about the selection of books, e-books, free and subscription resources for your patrons. The workshop will emphasize online resources but include traditional ones as well for a holistic overview of the current state of the art of collection development.

Highlights: Using presentations, exploration, exercises, discussion, and a packet of handouts, the instructors will show you how to:

  • Find new ideas for your collection development policy
  • Decide when to navigate from print to online resources
  • Compare vendor databases and services
  • Discover what your patrons really want
  • Stretch your budget using free online resources
  • Juggle multiple formats in your collection development budget
  • Discover the latest trends in e-books

Who should attend: Librarians or paraprofessional staff whose responsibilities include collection development, or anyone who wishes to learn more about the current state of collection development resources and techniques.

Prerequisites:

  • Familiarity with Windows, navigating the Web and using a mouse

Please Note: There is a $75.00 fee for this workshop. InFoPeople does not provide parking passes, lunch or refreshments.
