Libraries ma rket themselves as protectors and advocates of pri vacy. However\, the reality of how libraries use p atron data complicates the library&rsquo\;s abilit y to be privacy protector and advocate\, and in so me cases contradicts these roles. Libraries need p atron data for their library to function and to su rvive in a world that ties performance to budgets and resources\, but how can libraries be good data privacy stewards while meeting operational needs in this complicated data reality?\n \n This course provides the foundational knowledge around librar ies\, data\, and privacy for learners who are new to libraries or who want a place to start their li brary privacy journey:\n \n \n We will start with the connection between privacy and libraries\, an d the various factors that influence (and complica te) libraries&rsquo\; relationship with patron dat a.\n The course navigates through the patron data lifecycle\, how common library practices can put patron privacy at risk at each stage\, and how lea rners can reduce those risks.\n Finally\, the cou rse will dive into how to protect patron privacy t hrough various parts of library operations\, from privacy policies/procedures and patron services to working with vendors and staff working from home. \n The course will also touch on communication st rategies around privacy for both library workers a nd patrons.\n \n \n \n Course Description: This fo ur-week course will include two interactive online sessions:\n \n \n February 18\, 2021 at 10 AM Pa cific\, 11 AM Mountain\, Noon Central\, 1 PM Easte rn\n March 4\, 2021 at 10 AM Pacific\, 11 AM Moun tain\, Noon Central\, 1 PM Eastern\n \n \n The onl ine sessions will be recorded for those who cannot attend during the scheduled time.\n \n In additio n to the scheduled sessions\, the instructor will provide resources and guidance that will help you build a foundational understanding of this importa nt topic. During the course\, you will participate in discussion forums\, with an opportunity to sha re your experiences and questions\, alongside othe rs who are interested in learning library data pri vacy fundamentals.
