Children's Services Fundamentals
Who fills in when the Children's Librarian is sick or on vacation? If you answered "Me!" then this workshop is for you. Anyone -- librarian or paraprofessional who has to help children find books for homework or recreational reading, fill-in at a storyhour, emcee a family or children's library program, help during the summer reading program, or do other work with children in libraries will benefit from this workshop. With continuing cutbacks in libraries, we all need to be more multifaceted and this workshop will give you the skills to work with children in a variety of library situations.
After this workshop, you will feel more confident in offering homework assistance and giving advice on what to read next, have new ideas to liven up your storyhours and tours, and be more comfortable while hosting library programs.
Workshop Description: This all-day workshop will provide attendees with the skills to assist children in public, branch, and school libraries. During the workshop, attendees will participate in a mock book discussion group and a preschool storytime, brainstorm ideas for tours of the library, get hands-on experience with a variety of summer reading games, use bibliographies to offer readers' advisory, participate in reference interviews relating to homework, and work individually and in groups to prepare to host a variety of children's programs.
