Getting the Most from Microsoft Word

Getting the Most from Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word is one of the most versatile software programs available today. It can be used as a word processor, drawing program, spreadsheet, HTML editor and desktop publisher. Since Microsoft Word is becoming a de facto standard for creating documents from one-page handouts to multi-chapter books, this is probably the one piece of software that library staff will use most for communicating with others in print. Use Word to create flyers, letters, memos, sign up sheets and more. Word processing is just the beginning, see what else Word can do!

Workshop Description: In this hands-on Infopeople workshop, you will learn to use Microsoft Word to create a variety of documents used in everyday library situations. You'll take a tour of the Word work area, learn to create, format, edit and save documents and learn ways to use the program more efficiently. Use the skills from this class in your own day to day work and also to answer questions from patrons doing word processing in your library.

While working in Microsoft Word you will learn to:

  • Create and format documents; change page orientation, margins, font styles
  • Move around long documents efficiently
  • Learn to use:
    • bulleted and numbered lists
    • headers and footers (and know what to put in them)
    • keyboard shortcuts and drag-and-drop editing
  • Learn to track changes and add notes while editing to assist multiple users in working collaboratively
  • Insert Word art and pictures
  • Draw basic shapes
  • Create or insert tables into Word documents
  • Save to multiple file formats
  • Send Word documents as e-mail attachments
