Providing Homework Help at the Library

Every day after school, students of all ages pour into the library. You know they could benefit from your help, but you have limited resources and very busy staff. And it's difficult to keep apprised of the frequent changes in school curricula and standards. Your ability to maintain positive relationships with local schools varies with the interest level of a few teachers. Under these circumstances, handling the myriad of homework questions can be a real challenge.

"Providing Homework Help in Libraries" will equip you with the tools you need to provide homework help efficiently. You will learn about a range of financial, personnel, and administrative resources for establishing and maintaining homework help services--everything from practical, low cost program ideas to requirements for fully staffed homework centers.

Workshop Description: This all-day, interactive workshop will present proven models for delivery of homework help services, guiding you through the process of creating a realistic strategy for implementing a successful homework help program in your community. You will complete a homework help development plan, identifying key partners to assist with the operation. Through individual and small group exercises, you will learn about the skills and resources needed to provide homework help effectively, even when resources are limited. The instructor will also provide a template for homework help activities, a webliography and a list of personnel and funding resources.

Who should attend: Anyone from the California library community who is interested in initiating or improving a homework assistance program. This course is appropriate for public service staff, school library staff, youth services staff, librarians and library workers responsible for program or service development, library administrators, and volunteer coordinators.
